I'm still learning about Zetti and Chunky Books. For the Zetti portion, I used the black and white "striped" borders on the wings and hat. It's also common for Zetti creations to include hats.
We were required to include at least three types of materials. I incorporated scrapbook paper for the background, hand-drawn winges and hat, vintage phote, fabric for the dress and some super cute pink plaid fabric (peeking out on the right hand side). I also used three types of ribbon and some pleather cord.
I might add a few more things - some beads or wire?

Site: www.illustratedatcs.com I am quickly developing an addiction for creating these 4x4 chunky page. This is a new trader art endeavor for me. This piece is for a Zetti Mixed Media Chunky Book swap on www.illustratedatcs.com.
Original Youth, our clever host, is requiring at least 3 different types of media: papers, ephemera, paints, fibers, stitching, glazes, glitter, buttons, charms, etc.
I've managed to exceed this requirement by using a vintage photo, ink, prismacolor markers, acrylic paint, colored pencil and ribbon. Even so, I feel like this is a little sparse in comparison to most chunky books.
I tend to have a cleaner style when I approach these creations. I'm hoping I can find a better balance between chunky and my style as I create the remaining pages.
This page is for WhiteMoth. She has been a great supporter of my work and always offers lots of encouragement and kind words. I always love making art for her!!
Kosmopooch is hosting a sacred hearts swap on www.illustratedatcs.com. The criteria is as follows:
There is a world of symbolism behind the shape of a heart. Let's use color and texture to create luscious images out of this simple subject.
I love creating heart images. I did a whole series called anatomical endearments back in 2005 featuring images of hearts, brains, pelvises and an occasional skull.
Here are all the cards that I created for the swap:
I am so excited. My parents got me a digital tablet/pen for Christmas. I've been wanting to get one for years. So far, I've only been able to play with it for a few hours. In that time, I've discovered that I've got a lot to learn. The tablet is pressure sensitive. So, I'll have to spend some time getting a feel for it. Here are my first two experiments. The lifeguard is ATC size. He's super funny to me for some reason.
I just finished up hosting my first swap on www.illustratedatcs.com***. I hosted a Greek Goddesses and Gods swap and I learned that hosting a swap around the holidays can be challenging. Folks get so busy that they had to jump out of the swap and folks interested in joining were just too busy.
So, even though this was a small swap, it turned out beautifully. Folks created wonderful cards. Below is a small sampling of the gorgeous-ness that the lovely artists created.
***Small plug for www.illustratedatcs.com: if you are an artist, check out this ATC trading site. The focus is on hand-drawn/painted, original work. The people are wonderful, that art is fabUlous, and the swaps are uber-creative. You'll love it and we're looking for experienced artists to join us in our art-making adventures. If you are interested in joining, you can learn more here http://www.illustratedatcs.com/info/join.html.
The cards are for a wonderfully fun swap at www.illustratedatcs.com. Hosted by Klawzie, our goal is to create a set of cards for Clue. There's a creative twist though. It's the amusement park edition. Here's an exerpt from the swap detail:
Create your own murder suspects (or bring back your favorites!), weapons, and locations! Is it Mr. Green at the Ferris Wheel with the Poisoned Cotton Candy? Or Miss Shell Pink with the Mechanic's Wrench at the First Aid Station?
These are definitely a different style for me. I was going for something a little stylized and simple. I really love the way they look as a set.
I'm finally making some progress on my chunky book pages for the PAT (Pick-A-Theme) swap at www.illustratedatcs.com. I don't think I'm very good at the "chunky part", but everyone's themes have really stretched my skills. My work is almost always figurative and most of these are that. However, I've never worked with mythical creatures, but this one turned out creepy and beautiful. I'm really happy with the dragon. I also branched out and started playing with a other materials which I'll mention below . . .
From left to right
- Elizabethan Theme for Livia. I used some bias tape that I picked up for 25 cents at crowded closet. I also sewed very small black seed beeds into the collar.
- Zetti Goth Theme for Amerasu. This is straight up prismacolor markers. Not really chunky, but it was one of those drawings where I was so happy with the line quality - very clean, almost no line slips.
- Sleepers Dreaming for Kosmopooch. I used textured green ribbon on this page and hand sewed it onto the page. The text reads: In her dreams, she ran to feel the rain and wind on her skin.
- Dragon for CatSavannah. I am really, really pleased with this drawing and the level of detail that I accomplished. I also love the color palette - the colors were suggested in the swap details.
- 18th Century France for Potbelly Arts. The focus requested by PB was fashion and culture. Many of us are springboarding off of the Marie Antoinette visuals. PB asked for pinks, roses and golds for her piece. I love the little harpsichord. The background is from a fabulous fabric sample book that I snagged at crowded closet. I added a little black velvet ribbon at the bottom of the page for texture and interest.
One thing of note for myself about this chunky book project. I discovered a great glue that works for paper and fabric - Sobo Premium Craft and Fabric Glue. It's not washable, but it holds the fabric pretty fabulously. The label says that it also works for wood, ceramics, beads, leather, feathers.
I have been working on my etsy and it's open for business. Check it out here: bnoethen.etsy.com.
One of my pieces is also included in a treasury: http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list.php?room_id=10771
More pieces are coming soon!!
I am very excited to share that one of my altered book collages was chosen for publication in "In Situ" http://www.insituic.com/. There were 400+ submissions for the Fall issue.
In Situ is a collection of literary and visual arts from the Iowa City area. Everything from Poetry, short fiction, non-fiction and essays to paintings, photos of sculptures, photography, mixed media It's published by the local newspaper, the Iowa City Press Citizen.
I just started making cards in this style. I love the strangeness of the figures. They also have a lot of character. I traded away the chance of shiny card. I couldn't bear to part with goth girl though. I'm hoping to make more in this style. Also - I think my line work is improving. Drawing every day makes a huge difference. I'm developing muscle memory!!!!
